The beautiful doctor, Elizabeth “Doc” Clay offered to give Dalton a local anesthetic before stitching up the knife wound from his scuffle at the Double Deuce. He refused it.
She asked, “Do you enjoy pain?”
“Pain don’t hurt.” he replied.
To which she responded, “Are you a freaking moron?!”
Oh, wait, that’s what I shout at the TV every time I watch the movie, Road House, whenever it plays on TNT.
She merely stated that most of her patients would disagree with that.
You know what bothers me about that line (admittedly, from one of my all-time favorite movies)? It’s not just that it’s corny. And, it’s not that he somehow manages to sound cool when he says it. No, what really bothers me is that it simply DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!
Of course, pain hurts. By the very definition of the word, “pain”…it hurts. As a “word guy” those things grate on me. (A First-world problem, to be sure.)
Now, had he said, “I have a really high tolerance for pain” that would make more sense. Or even, “my Zen-like-yet-sarcastic-and-macho persona” prefers the tinge of pain to an anesthetic” would be acceptable.
But…”pain don’t hurt”?
Those type of lines can cause “gag-anitis.” Of course, we all know I’m just thinking way too much.
I’m sorry.
Oh, wait…”love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Huh? {Gag}
Forget it. This is so not a big deal. Carry on; enjoy the show.
But, don’t even THINK about “putting baby in a corner.” {Gag…Groan}

Bob, you’re definitely not kosher. Too much of a ham! 🙂
SMK
Sean: That’s too funny!! 🙂
You are TOO funny, Mr. Burg! Oops, I just did it myself…how can something or someone be “TOO funny?” Seriously!
You know what else doesn’t make sense? When someone says “Can I be honest with you???” Huh? First of all, why do you need to ask? Do you think there’s even the SLIGHTEST chance I might say “no”? Second of all, do I need to assume you’re NOT being honest all the times you DON’T begin with “can I be honest?” Third of all…… JEEEEEZ!!!
Also one of my all-time favorite movies my friend 🙂
As a self-proclaimed “Wordie”, I have had a problem with that line from Roadhouse for many years. I just had to switch it in my mind so that the Dr. is actually reacting to his choice of wording rather than his tolerance for pain when she says “Are you a freaking moron?”
Thanks for a humorous start to the day.
Bob, this was an entertaining ramble that made me start the day with a good laugh!! Thanks for this one.
Linda’s comment referencing the quote “Can I be honest with you?” reminded me of a similar line. The one I hear most often is the lead in statement of “Well to be completely honest….” It always makes me think about the conversation prior to that point… Was that part “partially honest”.
Tuesday is off to a great start. Have a great day!
Linda: Yes, that’s one of those “cringe-worthy” statements, as well. And, said VERY often! I believe I understand the intent. You’re right though; if thought through, it positions the speaker in the totally opposite way that they want to be positioned. 🙂
HeatherO: 🙂
Michael: Thank YOU. Yes, re-framing is definitely suggested! LOL!
Stephen: Thank you for putting the word, “entertaining” before “ramble.” 😉 And, yes…to be “completely” honest (rather than “just a little bit”) LOL
LOL!!!!! Much like that “real men don’t eat quiche” why not?????? 🙂 Fun way to start the week….thank you!
Christie: Ahhhh, you remembered that. Almost scary how alike we think! 🙂 🙂
I did!!! It is a bit scary, isn’t it 🙂
Bob, I was struggling between “rant” and “ramble”… I think the real word I was looking for was “post”. : ) So here is the edited version:
“Bob, this was an entertaining post that made me start the day with a good laugh!!”
Love your blog! Entertaining – Thought Provoking – Educational
Stephen: I think “ramble” worked just fine. It was pretty much what I did! 🙂
This cracked me up Bob! : ) Please…don’t even get me started. I run into things daily and wonder how much genuine thought went into it. Mindful deep breaths and accepting that other people’s thinking is out of my control and it is my curse alone to now avoid the glaring holes in common sense. (grins)
I loved your ramble. Be proud! : )
Thanks for my belly laugh for the day… and yes in todays society the lack of authentic conversations and wording can be annoying… and… All we can do is NOT think too Much LOL… Bob… and continue being our Brilliant selves… and that You are Kind Sir…
Bob,
Today is my Monday & your post was exactly what I needed!
Gag-anitis?? Love it! We’ll add that to your “isms!”
I usually develop this with certain reality TV shows (probably why there’s only 1 I tolerate!) or online dating sites (my comedy central!!)
Thx for the laugh!
g
Samantha: Thank you. And, I love your deep-thinking about shallow thinking! LOL
Carly: Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed that. And, I appreciate your always-kind words!
Geneva: Thank YOU. Always great to hear from you!
Bob, pain may not hurt, but bad dialogue does. On the other hand, without stupid dialogue, we wouldn’t have the fun of shouting at the screen!
GREAT article Bob!!!!!! And a good laugh. What we don’t do to “survive” things or situations we do not understand, things or situations we do not want to dominate us, or “the devil” in us where we want to make others look stupid in order to not look stupid ourselves. What kind of fraces have not been used to be able to confront our fears or “crimes” committed. Just listen to a childs “excuses” for “breaking” the laws of their parents – the can be just “too funny” as Linda used as expression. We all have these kind of “funny” sentences in our lives – AND we invented them all by our selves!!! At the very beginning or “then” they made sence – but brought in use “now” does not make sence to “the listener” because they do not make sence – but can be absolutely hillarious for “the ones witnessing” their use. LOL – Hope this make sence.
LOVE
Lene
Dain: True, my friend…on so many levels! LOL
Thanks for the laugh. That is all. No debate or disagreement required.
Lene: You ALWAYS make sense!! 🙂
Doug: LOLOL! “Holy inside joke, Batman!” 😉
Thank’s Bob – LOL – THAT was the RIGHT thing to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀
lol Bob! One thing is certain though “Pain don’t hurt” when you’re in a hypnotic trance it can become an experience to be experienced without the pain 🙂 🙂
Smiles from The English Sisters
English Sisters: But then it wouldn’t actually be “pain”…would it? 🙂 Bwahahahaaaaa (that was my “evil laugh”)
You know, I’ve never seen Roadhouse before. It might be time for a watch.
Joseph: Oh, it’s awesome (some corny sayings aside) LOL!
You know what, Bob–the next time I feel the razor-like sting while barefoot water skiing, I’m going to mutter “Pain don’t hurt” and think of you. Now that’s too funny! 😉
Karen: Maybe even try saying it three times fast. That might really help to take your mind off of that pain that “don’t hurt.” 😉
Had to mull that one. I THINK what he meant to say was “what other people call pain does not hurt me.”
But that just doesn’t sound as devil-may-care-but-I’m-tougher-than-he-is.
Makes you think about how many times people repeat something because it sounds cool, hip, wise, or zen, but when you break it down semantically it is contradictory, ill-advised, or even empty of meaning.
One of my LEAST favorites… “there is no try.” Really? There’s no effort? No attempt. Effort ALWAYS comes before outcome. If there is no try there is no success.
I understand the implication here – that sometimes you have to go into it with a I WILL attitude. But sometimes it’s important to just put effort into play, into experimentation, into that first approximation with no expectation except that you’ll give it your best with an open mind. Not everything is do or die – and when we believe that it is we stop trying a lot of new things.
Okay, down from my soapbox. Hugs to you my friend for providing the stimuli and the forum for it!
Dixie: Love your thought process. And, yes, while the “there is no try” line is one of my favorites in terms of “what he means”…indeed, you are correct that – by the nature of the thing – trying (the effort) IS part of the process. And, sometimes, even after trying our best, it doesn’t result in a victory. Hmm, I hope that doesn’t mean that the “there is no try” line gets demoted from being one of my all-time favorites. Good thing I never actually saw that movie. :-). I think I’ll go get some “Pizza the Hut.”
You can even keep “pain don’t hurt” as one of your favorite lines if you want to – off to Au Bon Pain for a latte now 🙂
No, that one was *never* one of my favorites. I cringe when he says that. 🙂 (I just got your Au Bon “Pain” reference) LOL! I hope going there “don’t hurt.”
Belly giggles. Thanks for them. Whew! I needed that today. 🙂
Leigh: Thank you. Every so often! 🙂
Ironic that the same movie also features the line….
Damn that hurts, don’t it?
Phil: LOL! That was a GREAT line by Wade (Sam Elliot), wasn’t it? So cool!
pain is just pain
no pain can hurt as much as other people hurt you
