The fifth “Element of Value” from The Law of Value in John David Mann’s and my book, Go-Givers Sell More (our “how-to” follow-up to The Go-Giver), is “Appreciation.”
There are two levels to this:
- When you live “in gratitude” you are happier, and you are more “attractive” to others. Yes, happiness is attractive. People are much more likely to want to be around you, work with you, do business with you, and refer you to others.
- When you appreciate others and communicate that appreciation — acknowledging them, thanking them verbally, sending them thank you emails and texts, and even better, handwritten thank you notes, complimenting them, speaking highly of them “behind their back” 😉 and helping them to feel genuinely good about themselves in all other ways — they then appreciate (which also means “to gain in value”) in their own mind. How do they then feel about you?
We could even say…
Key Point: When you appreciate people, *you* appreciate! (i.e., gain in value in their mind.)
Of course, this appreciation must absolutely come from an authentic place. You already know that.
Suggestion: What if you’re not feeling particularly appreciative of that person? Then find *something* — even if just one thing — about them you *do* appreciate. There’s always something.
Find it and focus your appreciation on that. Then watch how that feeling begins to spread to other areas. 🙂
Exercise: As you come across others, look for and notice what you appreciate about them.
And, if it seems like you don’t? Look a bit harder.
