Human nature can be defined as “the general psychological characteristics, feelings, and behavioral traits of humankind as considered shared by all humans.”
Yes, the basic nature of humans…that which drives us as a species.
We need to understand and accept that one huge aspect of this nature is self-interest. Yes, it’s our (human) nature. And if we let that “control us,” then not only will we limit the goodness and value that we can provide to the world around us…we’ll limit our own success, as well.
After all, people aren’t going to work with us because of *our* interests but rather because we focus on *their* interests. (Yes, they are self-interested, as well.) 🙂
Good News: We do not need to allow human nature to control us. As long as we are aware of it, we can *decide* to act in a much more benevolent, beneficial, and productive way for all concerned.
Thought to Consider: It seems that when we are internally motivated but outwardly focused, we’re creating a truly benevolent context for success — theirs and ours!
This is summarized beautifully by one of my great friends and mentors, Dan Rockwell of the Leadership Freak blog, who says:
“Self-interest is normal. Other-interest is leadership.”
Indeed, Dan. Indeed!
Exercise: Continually check your focus. To the degree that it is outward and geared toward genuinely bringing immense value to *others*…that’s the degree to which *your* influence will grow.
