Once again, we continue our series of interviews with co-authors from the excellent new book, The Character Based Leader. This book is a project of The Lead Change Group. It’s mission is to instigate a leadership revolution focused on the foundation of leadership being character. 21 authorities on this all-important topic took part.
Today, a brief chat with a great friend of mine, Dan Rockwell (a/k/a @LeadershipFreak on Twitter) who will discuss the role Humility plays in Leadership, and how one can actually lead themselves in that direction.
Dan’s wisdom is profound. I invite you to enjoy our discussion.
As I asked after my interview with Lisa Petrilli last week within the context of the Leadership trait she discussed, what leaders (past and/or current) come to your mind when it comes to the type of humility Dan discussed?

Hi Bob,
Thanks for bringing us this impactful 14min interview with Dan; absolutely packed with great insights!!!
Frederique: Thank you. Dan is indeed a phenomenal leader with a ton of wisdom. Thank you for your kind words! (And, I love reading your articles and the wisdom you share!)
Bob and Dan,
It is refreshing to listen to you discuss humility. Many are the times the measure of a humble leader is in having the guts to say “sorry” when he or she is wrong. If you can do this from the heart, then you are assured of credible and loyal followers. It also makes you more human, you know… and is telling on your character I think.
Regards,
Kimunya
Kimunya: Excellent points, indeed. Thank you for sharing that with us!
Dan & Bob,
Wonderful! Humility was something I lacked early in my career; so it was forced on me. 🙂
What a beautiful way to describe Humility as “an accurate asessment of your strengths and weaknesses.” Thanks so much for sharing!
I am looking forward to getting the book.
Roger: Thank you for sharing of yourself. Difficult to believe that would ever have been the case with you. So glad you enjoyed Dan’s wisdom!
Bob: Thank you so much for the kind words.
Wonderful podcast, Bob and Dan. Great questions and discussion. I felt like I was sitting at a coffee table with you listening to the conversation. You left me with much to think about. Thank you.
Jesse Lyn: Thank you. What a terrific compliment. Would have been great to have you at the coffee table with us!
Hi Bob and Dan,
Thank you so much for sharing! I agree with Jesse that you asked great questions, Bob.
Dan, thank you for sharing your wisdom 🙂 Great insight on humility. I love the term ‘Arrogance Block’. I believe that the ‘I know it all’ mentality does comprise our ability to listen and relationships with others. Collaborative leadership requires each leader having a humble heart.
Excellent discussion and sharing! Thanks!
Viola Tam
Viola: Thank you so much. Very appreciated!
