Chris Brogan is an online icon. A hugely popular blogger with an enormous following on Social Media platforms such as Twitter and Google +, he has bestselling books and commands huge speaking fees. Yes, Chris does well.
Many think he was an “overnight success.” Far from it. More like one step at a time, based on solid business principles. Here’s some of his very sound advice for building a business which he shared in a recent email to his list. Let’s begin with a biggie:
Refuse excuses. “I can’t be successful because I have kids; because I have a debilitating disease; because someone has already done what I wanted to do.”
He then relates — what he calls — his “tiny little map”:
1. Define success clearly. On paper. Write it…down.
2. Accept no small story. Your story was destined to be big, if only for you.
3. Work every day… Never coast. Never accept that you’ve done all you can do.
4. Get over yourself. (I’m writing this while feeling very depressed, stressed out, under appreciated, and many other emotions. Know what? Who cares? The work still needs doing.)
5. Put others first. The MOST successful people all have service of others as a core tenet of what they do.
I love it! He also added — what he called — “The Magical Formula” which, as you’ll see, is nothing magical at all:
“I found a way to be helpful and to make money from that. This is the magic success formula that {every successful person} follows. Do something awesome. Learn how to make money. That’s it.”
Notice there are no “get rich quick magic bullets” in Chris’ advice.
People often ask me what type of business I think they should go into in order to be successful. I typically suggest they find something they love to do and find a way to make it marketable. After all, if you love doing it but no one is buying it you’ve simply got yourself a really cool hobby.
On the other hand, Chris’ above advice can help one obtain success in practically any business.
Overnight success? Sure…just not tomorrow night. 😉

Carol, thank you. Glad you enjoyed the article and reading some of Chris’ wisdom!
Excellent Bob….thank you!
Rich, thank YOU!
Cousin Bob, another awesome post! I often talk about cousin Chris and the overnight success myth and you really nailed it in this post. Wonderful gems of wisdom. Thank you again and again!
Thank YOU, Cousin Berni. And Chris seems to get a lot of the “overnight success” myth attributed to him, for some reason, doesn’t he? The guy works at what he does. And he does it very well! Make it a great day, my friend!
Bob, I appreciate the stories you consistently share that relate key success principles. The examples of people who are getting “it” done step by step, building from wherever they were to where they are and on to wherever they are going provides much encouragement to all of us fellow travelers!
Thank you Teresa. I appreciate your kind feedback. And, as always, it was awesome seeing you at this past weekend’s event. Thank you so much for all your help!
The overnight success exists! You just have to make a lot of late nights! 🙂
Bob as usual you did a great job on your analysis of Chris Success. The best thing about this is that we ALL can make it too if we keep applying this right principles!
Thank you for your time and for sharing this with us.
All the best!!!
Bruno, thank you for your comments and kind feedback, my friend!
I was reading the book THREE FEET FROM GOLD by Sharon Lechter and Greg Reid and on the similar lines, Greg meets Bob Proctor in a flight who shares his success story and finally when Greg asked, “So you became an overnight success?”
To answer, Bob Proctor says,”Yes! It took only 22 years to be this overnight success”
We all need to be reminded that success is never overnight. Thank you for this post Bob. This is absolutely one of the core principles of success.
Regards,
Snigdha
Snigdha, thank you for sharing that great story! While it certainly need not take *that* long (and it really didn’t take anywhere near that long for Bob Proctor to become successful) 🙂 the principle holds very, very true.
Great article Bob.
Both Chris and you give us the blueprint for all of us to give AND profit.
Richard, thank you. Very appreciated, my friend!
Great post My Bob! Purpose is rooted in what you have to give. To be helpful already makes me feel so good and now to make money while being helpful, is what I call “a double dip of goodness all the way around.”
Once again, another home run Bob! Sometimes it is easy to get distracted and discouraged by others and their seemingly effortless climb to success. On a side note, I hope you are feeling better! You have brought a great deal of clarity and focus to me and my business through your books and this blog and I would like to take a moment to say THANK YOU for taking the time and effort that goes into making your business look so easy. I am a better person and business owner today because of you.
Thanks Bob, Very wise words and well stated. Love the statements about ‘refuse excuses’ and finding something you love and figure-out to make money at it. Thanks. Looking forward to your Orlando presentation Friday.
Move on people. Nothing new here.
Great post, Bob.
Chris has been a loyal supporter of mine, and I always try to promote what he does. He’s super-smart, and super-capable.
Most people don’t really know Chris, though.
I do, and he’s good people.
Period.

Amy: Terrific thoughts. Thank you!
Richard: Thank you. Look forward to seeing you Friday in Orlando!
Alan: Thank you. I take that as a great compliment!
Joel: I agree. He sure is! Thank you!
Bob… I was not that familiar with Chris until a friend of mine shared this on Facebook. My passion is helping others find their passion and believe in themselves. I really related to the part of Chris story that you shared about doing what you love. I tell people all the time that “If you do what you love, you’ll love what you do”. You should NEVER work… what you do for an income should be a joy to do, that way your clients/customers always get 100% of your effort and will tell others about you. WOrd of mouth is the greatest marketing EVER! Thanks for sharing this. I’m looking forward to learning more about him and reading more of your posts.
Expect To Win,
Laurie
