Over the past few weeks, John David Mann and I have been discussing Ben’s Five Keys to Legendary Leadership from our latest book, It’s Not About You. In this chat, we conclude with Key #5: Share The Mantle.
Sometimes, the most difficult challenge of being a successful leader is that you now know you are a successful leader. When that happens, an easy trap to fall into is forgetting that a large part of your success is realizing that it isn’t about you, but about those you lead (or, more accurately, serve). Have you ever seen someone go from where they LEAD to now thinking that they are the DEAL. The letters have changed; so has the effectiveness. And everyone involved suffers.
Great leaders share the mantle. One way they do this is by keeping the focus on where it belongs. Of course, if you are that leader, then you know that “It’s Not About You.”

Wow~ I just L-O-V-E your interviews, Bob and the ones with John are among my favorites! Maybe it’s because I’m in the Personal Development industry, but I am surrounded by people (YOU included, BIG TIME!) who happily share the mantle, and it makes me know, like and trust them even more than I already did. I was LOL when you talked about humility~”Look at how humble I am!!!” Funny and true. Thanks for another great listen!
Thanks Gentlemen!! great points….Curiosity!!! SO important in our efforts to pick up that phone! and…with regard to recruiting new and wonderful and productive consultants onto our sales teams….step outside of the world we live, and make the room for them to come in, for goodness sakes!!! PERFECT to start this wednesday….my team has been informed!!
Great advice in Sharing the Mantle. Also once had someone tell me “Don’t ever exert more power than the people who give you that power.”
Happy Holidays,
Dan’l.
Thank you, Linda. So glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your always very kind feedback!
Dena, much thanks. I appreciate that (and you) very much!
Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us, Dan. Much appreciated!
I love this conversation. So true that succession is so much more effective when it’s not all about you. And it’s not–it IS about what you (and they) are about. If it’s about you, it cannot be about what you are standing for. In this age of empowerment, it’s so critical for leaders to recognize their role in service of others–especially in empowering their leadership.
Richard, thank you for your kind feedback, my friend!
